More 80's nostalgia

Well, the problem with backfilling is that items change while you're not looking. :P

When I was in high school, most everyone was trying to look and be like Madonna; I had a slightly different role model. :)

Here we go with Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"

Tonight's bout of 80's nostalgia...

We're heading into girl groups tonight; this one is my favorite of the Bangles' collection. I know that "Walk Like an Egyptian" is more standard and "Manic Monday" is a bit more pedigreed, but this one speaks to me a bit more. Plus, I can't help but think this would be a great addition to the Rock Band game. :)

Ladies and gents, "Hazy Shade of Winter" as interpreted by the Bangles...

Tired of being tired

Again, I was hit with a great tide of sleepiness today that three naps could not shake. :P I feel fine otherwise, but I could not keep myself awake.

Forgot to mention that yesterday as we were heading to the car, I managed to faceplant myself in the grass. No explanation for it -- one moment, I'm stepping off the curb, the next I'm laying face down in the grass. No damage, fortunately, but it was a very ridiculous moment. I suppose I'm lucky not to have twisted something.

Tonight's 80's choice is a fun little ditty; sadly, it's another no-embed video (grr). So, get out your tights and powdered wigs and enjoy Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus"...

Alex's first day of vacation

Today:

* Library trip -- signed up for summer reading program.
* Movie theater -- saw Kung Fu Panda with [info]impink and [info]pulpjunkie.
* Dinner -- California Pizza Kitchen
* Just prior to bedtime -- [info]impink and [info]pulpjunkie playing "Lego Indiana Jones".

All in all, a day full of win.

Tonight's video -- get out your matching towels and look under a rock: it's the B-52s "Rock Lobster"!

Iz ownur of furst graider.

Today was Alex's last day as a kindergartener; I'm really, really proud of all the work he's done this year. He's still not quite up to speed, but he's so much farther along than he was a year ago.

Tonight's song: "That's Good" from Devo -- have a little more Devo in your life. It's good.

*yawn*

Man, I have no idea why I'm so tired. :P

Saw Kung Fu Panda tonight; it was very good and I think Alex will like it. There's some scary kitty moments, but I think he can work through it. He'll like the panda. :)

Quick embed tonight -- this song popped in my mind as I dropped Alex off earlier in the week. No real reason, but it did get thoroughly lodged in. Remember to head back to your bars, your temples, your massage parlours... and hope for the best with the god in the golden cloister. For your visual and audial pleasure, Murray Head's "One Night in Bangkok"...

Scots. Lots and lots of Scots.

Enjoy, you crazy VTSFFCers. :D

Thinking a little about age...

As I've been watching some late-night stuff, I've seen ads for Botox-like items that are "fillers". These "fill in the lines around your face and give you a youthful appearance". Just one problem -- those are lines that develop from smiling, laughing, and generally using your face. When they show the "after", it looks like she's never moved her face in her whole life. This is something you want? No thanks -- I'd rather look like I've lived a bit. :)

Speaking of advancing age, I noticed this morning that I've got a few faint lines across my forehead. When I raised my eyebrows in surprise at this development, I noticed that it matched the lines exactly. "Ah," I thought, "these are my incredulous lines." :)

Today's flashback is the only time you're going to see a repeat band. The 80's had a couple of very fun songs celebrating paranoia and general insanity. This is the first of two -- please enjoy Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?" and ignore the men in black outside your window...

That's the thing about setting items like the 80's music posts up: it makes me a little more inclined to keep a schedule. :)

Heat wave -- dear god, this weather is absolutely frellin' brutal. I am a temperate creature; my comfort range is small and lies between 71 and 77. 100 degree weather does not agree with me at all. :P Alex seems to be handling it a little better than I am, but even he doesn't like it that much. The AC is holding up and I can only hope for a slight break in the weather soon. :P

In honor of the hot wind on my shoulder, tonight's 80's flashback is Wall of Voodoo and their stint on "Mexican Radio". Enjoy the barbecued iguana...

Post the second

We're not puddles, but it was damn close. :)

Today, Alex, [info]pulpjunkie, and I headed to the National Zoo. My original intention was that we go for a few hours, then head home. We wound up staying for about 5 hours or so. It was ridiculously hot, but there were enough animals out to make it worthwhile. Alex especially liked the Florida soft shelled turtles, but my main attraction was the tigers. :)

The journey via Metro was fine and Alex behaved himself really well: all in all, a good day.

And now, your 80's song for the day: this is a big ol' smooch to all you VTSFFCers out there -- Fire Inc.'s "Nowhere Fast". Enjoy. :D

Heat wave...

Not really loving all the heat going on around here; I tend to wilt in too much heat. However, Alex and I braved the heat to attend a party for my cousin's oldest boy; he's made it safely through high school and has his eyes set on a very cool career course of forensics. :) (His back-up choice is video game design -- also cool, but not quite as cool as forensics.)

On to today's 80's music choice: during the 80's, one couldn't turn around without bumping into a Huey Lewis and the News song. This one wasn't my absolute favorites, but it is amusing in the fact that it's the story of a fellow that's absolutely hopeless in figuring out that his romance is over. Listen, when she's hanging out with multiple sailors who are winning her pelicans, it's likely that the relationship is over. I also give great credit to the guys in the News because they're good sports. I can only imagine the conversation with the video director: "Hang on, hang on.... Huey gets the hot blonde and we have to be buried up to our necks in sand?"

So here it is -- "If This Is It" by Huey Lewis and the News...

(Sorry -- this is the best copy of the video, but EMI does not want it embedded. D'oh)

80's music, day 6

*yawn* No real post tonight, but here's another bit o' flashback. This was the first song of theirs I really liked. It's not too heavy musically, but it is nice and peppy. Plus, like a majority of teenage girls at the time, I thought they were very cute: on the record, my favorite was John.

And now, Duran Duran's "Rio"...

80's music, day 5

Tonight's video is notable not only for a great amount of 80's cheese, but for the number of 80's videos it parodies. Warning: excessive gyrations and buxom women, but honestly it's tame compared to every thing today.

Without further adieu, David Lee Roth and "Just a Gigolo"...

80's music, day 4

OK -- today's entry still just as 80's as yesterday, but a little less scary. I loved this band -- sang along with their album all the time when it first came out.

Enjoy the extreme Australian-ness: Men at Work's "Land Down Under"

Arrgh!

OK -- so I almost blew the music posting streak within the first few days. However, hopefully this will go through fast enough. It's bizarre and has another set of rampant violins.

Ladies and gentlemen, ABC's "Look of Love"

80's music, day 2

So, this isn't the song I was originally going to post, but given Bo Diddley's passing, I thought it would work. This is his appearance in George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone". Even when he's not the featured player, he's damn cooler than everyone else.

Thing I was meaning to do in May...

So, there was this idea I had for the "Merry Music Month of May" where I was planning on posting an 80's song each day of the month. Then... well, won't bore you with details, but it didn't happen. So, let's try resetting this and pretend I have a pithy title. Suggestions are welcome.

Anyway, to start, let's try one of my absolute favorite 80's ditties. It's got a kickass piano riff right at the beginning and it's full to the brim with violins -- an instrument sadly lacking in a lot of modern music. Without further adieu, here's Madness and "Our House"
